Father Worthley to be Transferred

As you may know, I am due for a transfer to a different parish by the end of May. As a result, we will have to suspend the Traditional Latin Mass here at Sacred Heart. Learning this form of liturgy and the weekly celebration of it has been a source of great joy for me. I am grateful to so many people who have helped out with everything (altar servers and their training, music, receptions, sanctuary setup, collections, and encouragement).

Our final Mass using the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite will be on Sunday May 15 at 5:00pm. There will be no Traditional Latin Mass at 12:30 on that day. If weather permits, after the 5:00pm Mass, we will have a cookout.

The Palm Sunday T.L.M. at Sacred Heart will be a low Mass, even though it is the 3rd Sunday of the Month.

Liturgy and Unity...

Monsignor Nicola Bux, the well-known litugical scholar who is Consultant to the Office of Liturgical celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff (and also to the Congregation for Divine Worship and he Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith) was the featured speaker at a recent conference in Versailles. Amongst his comments he noted that that the Extraordinary Form is for all of the People of God, and not just a minority, and that it ought to serve as a training for the better celebration of the Ordinary Form. He admonished priests to be courageous in the implementation ofSummorum Pontificum, and added that the refusal of the Extraordinary Form could be considered as a rupture of communion with the Pope.

If you think about it, he's right. The Holy Father has declared the traditional Mass to be a form of the Roman Rite, and made it available to all who desire to celebrate it or worship at it. As Msgr. Bux stated, the Pope wants this Mass available for the whole Church. For a priest or bishop to intentionally and deliberately thwart the pope's will for the People of God is indeed a rupture of communion. This might sound "judgmental" but it's just plain speaking. The pope isn't simply analogous to a secular C.E.O., he is the Vicar of Christ and the Successor of Peter. One opposes his will at their own risk.

[N.B. Msgr. Bux is NOT denouncing anyone who simply prefers the Ordinary Form, he is referring to bishops or pastors who without a valid reason obstinately deny good-faith requests from their flock - including their clergy - for the Extraordinary Form.]

We will celebrate a Sung High Mass using the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite on Thursday evening October 7 at 7:00PM. This will be the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. All are welcome!

By the way, one of the greatest helps for you when you attend a Mass in the Extraoardinary Form is to have your own hand Missal which contains all the parts of the Mass - including the lessons from Scripture. Let me suggest you purchase a Daily Roman Missal from Baronius Press.

Gregorian Chant classes come to Sacred Heart Parish

A Note from Father Jason Worthley

Some years ago, the Second Vatican Council requested that Gregorian Chant be "given pride of place in liturgical services." While encouraging the composition of modern and truly sacred music for our liturgy, Vatican II desired that the musical treasure of Gregorian Chant be preserved. Pope Benedict XVI has repeatedly upheld this request of Vatican II. As you know, in our liturgical celebrations using the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (also known as the Traditional Latin Mass), on occasion we are able to use Gregorian Chant. In the past few months, some of the teenagers in our parish have helped us greatly in this regard.

In the hopes of expanding the size of the choir that sings Gregorian Chant, I am pleased to inform you that we will have several chant classes here at our parish. My good friend, Mr. Steve Cavanaugh, will be leading these classes. I encourage those who are musically inclined to consider attending these classes, even if you cannot always make it to the 12:30 Extraordinary Form Mass. Who would have believed this a year ago?

On Thursday 3 June at 5:30 p.m. there will be a Sung Mass in the Extraordinary Form for the Feast of Corpus Christi at Sacred Heart Church. Immediately after* Mass there will be a traditional Corpus Christi procession. The procession will encircle the block on which the church and the other parish buildings are situated. Benediction will be be given at two altars on the route of the procession, and the procession will end with Solemn Benediction at the main altar of the Church. There will be a collation afterward with light refreshments served.

As part of the celebration of the 125th anniversary year of Sacred Heart Parish there will be a Sung Mass in the Extraordinary Form on Friday 11 June at 7:00 p.m. on the parish's patronal feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Litany of the Sacred Heard will be recited after Mass, a parish reception will follow.

Tell your family and friends. How many of them - or you - have been to a Corpus Christi procession in the past 40 years? Join us - and Pope Benedict XVI - in professing our Faith and restoring our Catholic Identity.

*Sunset on 3 June is at 2016 (8:16 p.m.) so there will be plenty of time for the procession

Almost forgot, in case anyone else needs reminding, that this Sunday's Extraordinary Form Mass at Sacred Heart will be a Missa Cantata with the South Schore Gregorian Chant Schola.

After Mass there will be a collation - perhaps one could call it a "bruncheon" - in the parish offices, directly behind the church. Please join us!

Also - our somewhat impromptu cookout after last Sunday's Mass, which had been rescheduled to 5:00 pm, was a great success. It has been suggested that we do it again, although it would obviously be immediatly after the 12:30 E.F. Mass instead of in the evening. Please let us know your thoughts on this...

April 11th - More News

On Divine Mercy Sunday (11 April) Father Jason Worthley will lead a Eucharistic Holy Hour at 3:00PM. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be recited before the Blessed Sacrament. Father will offer a brief reflection on the Divine Mercy and then will make himself available for confessions. A plenary indulgence is granted to those who take part in the prayers and devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy.
As Fr. Worthley announced the T.L.M. at Sacred Heart on 11 April will be at 5:00PM.
After the 5:00 Latin Mass, there will be an informal cookout, weather permitting. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided, feel free to bring an appropriate side dish or dessert.

Schedule Correction

I incorrectly reported that there would be a Mass in the Extraordinary Form every Wednesday and Thursday of Lent, from the Thursday after Ash Wednesday (18 February) through Spy Wednesday (31 March).

The last Lenten weekday Mass will be this Thursday, 25 March, for the Feast of the Annunciation. There will be no Mass on Wednesday 31 March.

Mass for Palm Sunday

Please note that, following the liturgical provisions, I will be using the short form for the Gospel of Palm Sunday this year. I will not be reciting the full Passion account, but instead will read the Continuation of the holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, 27:45-52. We will, however, have the blessing of Palms before Mass begins, with a short procession.

Also, please note: I will not be celebrating a Mass at 12:00 on Wednesday March 31.

Light Refreshments After 12:30 Mass?

Last Sunday's collation after Mass was very well attended and I heard a lot of positive comments. The food and the company were great and there seems to be some sentiment toward doing this more often. Father Worthley would like to hear your thoughts on this.

Would you like to have coffee, etc. after Mass more frequently? If so, how frequently? Would you prefer just coffee and donuts, etc. or more substantial fare, e.g. luncheon? What other ideas or suggestions do you have?

High Mass!

Thanks to the work of Steve Cavanaugh who prepared the Schola and Leo Higgins who drilled the servers, we had our first Missa Cantata on Sunday 21 February. Everything went very well, and it was wonderful to hear Gregorian Chant at Sacred Heart! The collation after Mass was also very well attended.

For at least March and April there will be a High (sung) Mass on the 3rd Sunday of each month at the regular time, 12:30 p.m. There will be coffee and refreshments afterward, in the parish office, on both Sundays.
